Pre-operating Consultants :

Pre-Operative Tobacco addiction

The Expert Conference of the French Society of Anaesthesia and Reanimation, December 23rd, 2005.
Every year, 8 millions of patients undergo anaesthesia in France, about 2 millions of surgical interventions concern smokers.
Quite briefly, it is established that the Pre-Operative tobacco addiction for the adult :

Increases the risk of general complication : the infectious and coronary risk is multiplied by three and the immediate respiratory complications are doubled.

Increases the risk of surgical complication : 2 to 4 times more complications on the scars with a risk of skin suffering and desertion of suture with delays of skinning

That is why it is important to stop smoking before any intervention.
The disappearance of the complication risk is observed when stopping smoking 6 to 8 weeks before the intervention.
Yet, a more belated stop also brings a profit.

Medical recommendations before your intervention in Tunisia :

Medical exams

For all types of intervention :

  • Biologic balance (group, NFS, Tablets, TP, TCK).
  • Virological balance HIV, Hepatitis B and C.
  • Cardiologic balance including a cardiovascular exam with EKG for the patients older than 45.
  • Respiratory balance if your consumption of tobacco is important or if you endure a chronic respiratory trouble.
  • For those that have a chronic illness (diabetes, hypertension…) we need a recent balance of your illness.

For a mammary surgery :

  • In addition to the above stated exams, a recent mammography.

The results of these exams must reach us by e-mail before your arrival and the original ones will be shown to the medical team during your preparatory visit.

Be careful !!

  • During the 15 days that precede your intervention, you should imperatively stop all medicines containing the aspirin (risk of bleeding during and after the operation).
  • To stop all contraceptive medicines (pills) one month before.
  • Not to eat, drink, or smoke for a minimum of 8 hours before your intervention.
